Synopsis: The Context of White Supremacy hosts the seventh study session on Rebecca Skloot‘s non-fiction top-seller, The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was a black mother of five children who suffered through cervical cancer; she died in 1951.
Suspected Racists in White lab coats raped her genetic material without consent and have used her cells – code-named HeLa – to develop astronomical quantities of vaccines, cancer medications, in vitro fertilization, gene mapping and cloning – mostly to help Whites. Neither Ms. Lacks or her black family members received a cent for this likely act of “medical apartheid;” her relatives were not apprised of the genetic plundering until two decades after her death.
Suspected Race Scientists continued their trifling record by experimenting on her children – also without permission. Last week’s segment presented one of the few moments when a black person indicts Skloot – Whites in general – for their collective, systemic barbarism. Zakariyya – Henrietta’s son – is highly suspicious of Whites and makes no effort to conceal or dilute his justifiable rage. Skloot depicts him as a hulking, black menace – much like Michael Brown, Jr. Deborah – Henrietta’s daughter – eventually drops her skepticism of Skloot and is portrayed as being tickled to have Ms. Rebecca as her “White friend.” As Skloot is a White Woman, we’ll maintain our suspicion and alertness for the taint of her likely Racist perspective on the structure of this book.
